At that time, the French Way of the Camino de Santiago had lost much of its foot traffic compared to the Middle Ages. It was within this landscape of institutional neglect that a humble rural priest decided to dedicate his life to rescuing the Camino de Santiago.

Elías Valiña Sampedro

Don Elías Valiña Sampedro, born in the municipality of Sarria (Lugo) in 1929, was assigned as a parish priest to the village of O Cebreiro in 1959. Valiña fell in love with Jacobean history, eventually earning a degree in Canon Law and presenting a doctoral thesis on the Camino de Santiago, which became the most comprehensive scientific study of the time. Elías understood that for the Camino to attract crowds once again, it was vital for it to be safe.

Valiña began studying the ancient routes from medieval codices to map out the exact itinerary of the path. He was so excited about the project that, lacking any financial support from public administrations, he decided to take action and become the sign painter of a transcontinental masterpiece.

The year of origin: When and where was the first arrow painted?

The major transformation of the route’s landscape took place in the summer of 1984. Equipped with a paintbrush and several cans of paint, Elías Valiña set off in his modest Citroën 2CV. Don Elías began his first signage work in the Pyrenees, specifically around the Somport Pass and near Roncesvalles, the two traditional entry points from Europe.

During that summer and the following years, Don Elías traveled thousands of kilometers from Navarre to the Obradoiro, marking every doubtful crossroads to guide the pilgrims. At that time, he was occasionally accompanied by some relatives, altar boys, and the very first Jacobean volunteers.

Additionally, there is a very funny anecdote that took place in the mountain passes of Navarre during the signage period. The Civil Guard, baffled to see the Galician priest systematically painting strange symbols in a border zone during politically complex years, decided to detain him and question him intensively to find out what he was up to. To the agents’ suspicions, Valiña replied with a smile and a phrase that has since become part of the route’s folklore: “Don’t worry, I’m not preparing a military invasion… I’m just marking the Camino de Santiago.”

Why was the color yellow chosen?

Choosing the color yellow was possible thanks to the solidarity of some public roadwork employees. In the months leading up to the start of his 1984 signage campaign, the national highways of northern Spain were undergoing modernization and repainting.

Don Elías befriended some workers from the former Ministry of Public Works and Urbanism (MOPU) who were painting the road markings. When they found out about the crazy plan the priest wanted to carry out, the workers decided to secretly give him several leftover cans of paint, which were used to mark temporary roadworks.

Over time, the color proved to be a great choice: the industrial yellow stands out sharply against the green of the forests, the gray of the asphalt, the brown of the mud, and the ocher of the plains, ensuring that the symbol remained clearly visible.

Symbolism and meaning of the yellow arrows

Today, the yellow arrow is a symbol that provides safety, confidence, and universal brotherhood. From a conceptual design perspective, the yellow arrow transcends any language or cultural barrier. No matter where the pilgrim comes from, the arrow’s code is instantly understood.

The rough, asymmetrical shape of the yellow arrow exalts the true spirit of the Camino: an imperfect, human, and ever-changing path where the final destination is personal growth achieved over the course of many kilometers.

Who invented the yellow arrow of the Camino de Santiago?
