For twelve months, the Galician temple is transformed into the spiritual epicenter of global Christianity. Its true meaning stems from the concept of the Jubilee: a time for inner renewal, reconciliation, and absolute forgiveness granted to everyone who comes to honor the remains of the Apostle.

One of the most frequent questions is the difference between “Xacobeo” and “Jacobeo”. The answer is purely linguistic; “Jacobeo” is the term in the Spanish language, derived from Iacobus. On the other hand, “Xacobeo” is the Galician adaptation.

The Historical Origin of Holy Years: A Millennial Tradition

To talk about the origin of this cultural tradition, we have to go back eight hundred years, to the Middle Ages. The Compostela Holy Year originated in the year 1179 thanks to the papal bull Regis aeterni, promulgated by Pope Alexander III. Through this pontifical decree, the Catholic Church granted the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela the privilege of celebrating its own Jubilee Year, elevating it to the same spiritual status as Rome and Jerusalem.

This privilege was the catalyst for the definitive development of the Camino de Santiago as an economic, artistic, and spiritual artery in Medieval Europe. A vast multitude of barefoot pilgrims crossed continental borders with a single objective: to reach Galicia during the jubilee period to cleanse their souls. Monasteries and pilgrim hospitals sprang up along the route to provide shelter for the people.

How Often is the Xacobeo Holy Year Celebrated? The Mystery of the Calendar

One of the curiosities surrounding the Xacobeo Holy Year is the irregularity of its dates. The rule that dictates the activation of this feast year is essential: a year will only be considered a Holy Year (Xacobeo or Jacobeo) if July 25th (the Feast of Saint James the Apostle) falls exactly on a Sunday.

Due to the combination of leap years and the rotation of the days of the week in our Gregorian calendar, this phenomenon occurs following a fixed cycle of time intervals: every 6, 5, 6, and 11 years. This curious calendar fluke means that the wait between one holy event and the next can become agonizingly long.

The Great Rituals of the Holy Year: Symbols That Come to Life

The celebration of the Holy Year manifests through a series of solemn liturgies and physical symbols that have endured over time.

The Opening of the Holy Door in the Plaza de la Quintana

The central ritual of the Xacobeo Holy Year takes place every December 31st on the eve of the Holy Year. Ecclesiastical authorities gather in the Plaza de la Quintana in front of a solid stone wall that seals the entrance to the cathedral. The Archbishop of Santiago, carrying a silver hammer, strikes the masonry wall three symbolic times. The wall is cleanly dismantled from the inside, and the entrance—the Holy Door—remains wide open for the next 365 days of the jubilee year.

Plenary Indulgence

Crossing the Holy Door grants the pilgrim the greatest spiritual benefit of the Catholic faith: the plenary indulgence. This privilege completely erases the temporal punishment for all the sins committed by the traveler throughout their life. The cathedral requires three conditions to be met within the fifteen days before or after arrival: visiting the Apostle’s tomb in the crypt, saying a prayer for the Pope’s intentions, and receiving the sacraments of confession and communion at the Pilgrim’s Mass.

What is the Xacobeo Holy Year and What is Its True Meaning?
