This emblem has guided millions of pilgrims throughout the centuries.

What is the Cross of Saint James?

The Cross of Saint James is an heraldic cross of an intense red color that is represented on a white or neutral background. It has a distinctive shape: it is a cross flory (its side and top arms end in fleurs-de-lis), whose bottom arm narrows to become the point of a sword.

From a technical standpoint, it is a “cross fitchy,” designed to be driven into the ground. Today, it represents the identity of the route and the protection of the Apostle. It is, in essence, the banner of Galician identity and of Christianity itself within the context of the Reconquista.

Design and meaning of the Cross of Saint James

The design of the Cross of Saint James has a clear communicative intent.

Characteristics of the Cross of Saint James

The structure of the Cross of Saint James is composed of three main elements:

The hilt

The quillons

The point

The upper part and the two side arms mimic the fleur-de-lis, a symbol associated with purity and nobility. On the other hand, the lower part is a sharp sword blade. This shape allowed the knights to drive the cross into the ground to say their prayers when they did not have an altar available.

Symbolism of the Cross of Saint James

The sword shape of the Cross of Saint James represents the martyrdom of the Apostle Saint James, who was beheaded by order of Herod Agrippa I in Jerusalem. On the other hand, the fleurs-de-lis symbolize “unstained honor,” a reference to moral purity. The blood-red (ruby) color reinforces this idea of sacrifice and courage.

Historical origin: The order of the Knights of Saint James

If we want to understand the Cross of Saint James, it is necessary to place ourselves in the 12th century. At that time, going on a pilgrimage to Compostela was a high-risk activity. It is in this context that the Order of Saint James was born in the Kingdom of León (specifically in Cáceres, around 1170), with the primary goal of protecting pilgrims heading to the apostle’s tomb.

These knights were both monks and soldiers. Unlike other orders, the Knights of Saint James had less strict rules regarding celibacy (they were allowed to marry), which favored their growth and economy. If a pilgrim saw that cross from afar, they knew they were under sacred protection.

Who can wear the Cross of Saint James Today?

In the past, the use of the Cross of Saint James was limited to the members of the Order. However, with the dissolution of the military power of the orders and the democratization of the Camino de Santiago in the 20th century, the symbol became the heritage of the people and the pilgrims.

Today, the Cross of Saint James is a symbol of cultural identity and can be worn by anyone. However, within the heraldic and nobility sphere, the Order of Saint James still exists as an honorary nobility corporation under the command of the King of Spain, maintaining the formal use of the cross for its current members.

If you have ever traveled along the French Way or climbed the mountain passes of the Northern Way, you will […]

[2

post-2404","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sin-categorizar
["GET
