The story originates in the 14th century in the town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada, in La Rioja, where a German pilgrim named Hugonell was traveling to Santiago with his parents. While staying at a local inn, the innkeeper’s daughter fell in love with him. However, after being rejected by the young man, she decided to seek revenge by hiding a silver cup in Hugonell’s pouch and accusing him of theft the following day.

The young man was summarily tried and sentenced to hang. His parents continued their journey to Santiago de Compostela, and on their return, they passed by the place where he had been executed. To their amazement, Hugonell spoke to them from the gallows, telling them he was still alive thanks to the protection of Santo Domingo.

The parents went to the magistrate’s house to report the miracle. The magistrate, who was about to have poultry for dinner, mocked them, saying: “Your son is as alive as this rooster and this hen that I am about to eat.” At that exact moment, feathers sprouted on the birds and they jumped off the plate, cementing the famous saying: “Santo Domingo de la Calzada, where the hen sang after being roasted.”

The Fountain of La Reniega

Located on the Navarrese Way, next to the Alto del Perdón, lies the mythical Fountain of La Reniega. Legend has it that a pilgrim was walking up the mountain pass on a suffocating summer day. The extreme heat and thirst caused the pilgrim to collapse to the ground, finding himself on the brink of death.

At that moment, the Devil appeared to him disguised as a handsome young pilgrim, showing him the secret location of a fountain. However, he asked for something in return: the pilgrim had to renounce God, the Virgin Mary, and Saint James the Apostle. The pilgrim firmly rejected the offer.

Angered by his failure, the Devil vanished. At that exact moment, Saint James the Apostle miraculously appeared and came to the pilgrim’s aid, giving him fresh water to drink from his own gourd. Furthermore, he made a spring gush from the rock, which has quenched the thirst of travelers ever since.

The Miracle of the Eucharist of O Cebreiro

For pilgrims tackling the French Way, the climb up to O Cebreiro is a milestone of self-improvement that opens the gates to Galicia. This village of stone pallozas (traditional thatched huts) preserves one of the oldest miracles in Christendom, dating back to the 14th century.

The legend tells the story of a monk from the village church who was celebrating mass on a winter day during a snowstorm. The monk thought that no one would come to the church in such terrible weather. However, the temple doors flew open and in walked Juan Santín, a peasant from a neighboring village who had climbed the mountain just to hear mass. The monk murmured with contempt: “What a fool, coming in this dreadful weather just for a bit of bread and wine.”

At the moment of consecration, God punished the cleric’s pride and rewarded the peasant’s devotion. The bread of the host transformed into bleeding flesh before the monk’s eyes, and the wine in the chalice became actual blood. The monk collapsed to the floor in shock.

Today, the Holy Grail of this miracle is exhibited inside the church in a reliquary donated by the Catholic Monarchs.

The Pilgrim’s Shadow: The Nighttime Mystery of the Plaza de la Quintana

Santiago de Compostela offers mysteries that are only revealed when the sun goes down. One of the most famous is found in the Plaza de la Quintana, at the foot of the Berenguela Tower. At night, when the cathedral lights come on, the silhouette of a medieval pilgrim is projected onto the granite walls.

Legend has it that the shadow belongs to Leonard du Riant, a 15th-century French cleric who was sentenced to go on a pilgrimage to Santiago for murdering his father. On the other hand, another version deeply rooted in local culture claims that it is the soul in torment of a cathedral canon who was in love with a cloistered nun from the San Paio convent, located in the square.

The lovers agreed to escape together one night. He disguised himself as a pilgrim so as not to draw attention, but she never made it to the meeting due to remorse and the fear of being discovered.

The Mystery of Obanos and Saint William

The town of Obanos is the setting for one of the most moving medieval tragedies along the Jacobean route. The legend tells the story of Felicia of Aquitaine, a princess who, after going on a pilgrimage to Santiago, experienced a spiritual conversion that led her to renounce her privileges.

Felicia settled in the lordship of Amocáin, working as a field servant dedicated to caring for the poor. Her brother, Duke William of Aquitaine, launched a search across the entire peninsula until he managed to track her down.

William tried to convince her and force her to return in order to fulfill her dynastic obligations. Faced with Felicia’s refusal, the duke flew into a rage and slit his sister’s throat. Upon realizing the situation and the sheer atrocity of his crime, William decided to go on a pilgrimage to Santiago to beg for forgiveness, and he ended his life as a hermit at the hermitage of Arnotequi, being canonized years later.

The Miracle of Santo Domingo de la Calzada This is one of the most important universal legends of the Camino […]

[2

post-2421","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sin-categorizar
["GET
