Its origin dates back to the safe-conducts or letters of introduction issued by kings and bishops to pilgrims in the Middle Ages, which guaranteed their free passage and protection against bandits. Today, this passport consists of a cover page where you fill in your personal details and chosen mode of transport, alongside a grid of blank spaces waiting to be filled with stamps.

This document serves several purposes:

It is the mandatory key to access the network of public and parish albergues, and you will be required to show it before being assigned a bunk bed.

The properly stamped credential is the only valid legal proof accepted by the Pilgrim’s Office in Santiago to certify that you have completed the required distances.

How to Get Your Pilgrim Credential

Obtaining this Camino passport is a simple and inexpensive process that is recommended to be sorted out in the weeks leading up to your departure. The traditional way to get it is by physically visiting the headquarters of the Associations of Friends of the Camino de Santiago. You can also request it by post through their official websites in exchange for a symbolic donation, which usually ranges between 2 and 3 euros.

If you don’t have an association near your hometown, you can purchase it at Kilometer 0 of your starting point. The major traditional starting points of the route usually keep a large stock of official credentials at their visitor information desks. Make sure the document you buy features the endorsement and logo of the Archdiocesan Pilgrim Office of Santiago de Compostela, which is the only credential with universally approved validity.

Stamping Rules: How and Where to Stamp Your Credential?

Using the credential is one of the most beautiful daily rituals of the journey, but it is subject to strict rules that the Cathedral Chapter will review before handing over your diplomas. Stamping acts as a geographical diary. You can collect stamps from an immense variety of places all along the way.

The most important rule for stamping is divided into two phases. Throughout the general course of your first stages, official regulations state that getting one stamp per day is sufficient, which is usually collected in the afternoon at the albergue where you spend the night.

On the other hand, the rules become stricter during the final control section. For cyclists, the last 200 km of the journey strictly and non-negotiably require a minimum of two stamps per day. This double-check aims to prevent last-minute fraud, forcing you to get one stamp halfway through your cycling day and a second one at the end of the stage.

What to Do if Your Pilgrim Passport Fills Up or Gets Lost on the Camino de Santiago?

One of the biggest problems is losing your credential, having it stolen mid-journey, or finding out that you have run out of empty spaces.

If you find yourself in a situation where your credential has completely filled up before finishing the Camino, the solution is simple: just purchase a second “continuity” credential at the next albergue, tourist office, or major church. Upon arriving at the Pilgrim’s Office in Santiago, you will simply need to present both credentials.

The real problem arises with the loss of the document. If you lose your Camino passport and are left with nothing mid-route, the ecclesiastical rule is clear: any previously unstamped kilometers are officially lost toward receiving your Compostela. In this case, you will have to buy a new credential and start getting stamps from that exact point forward.

What Is the Pilgrim Credential and How Does It Work?
