From a historical perspective, it is a propaganda and doctrinal work of the highest order, designed to consolidate the universal prestige of Santiago de Compostela, placing it on the same level as Rome and Jerusalem.

The most important aspect of the Codex Calixtinus is that it unifies the liturgy and maps out a clear route for pilgrims; the manuscript transformed the Camino de Santiago into a channel for linguistic, artistic, and commercial exchange. The book functioned as the great catalyst that brought the Camino de Santiago to life.

Furthermore, the manuscript is known as Calixtinus because the text begins with a letter falsely attributed to Pope Callixtus II, a great benefactor of the Church of Santiago.

The Structure of the Codex: The 5 Books That Hide the Secret of Santiago

The Codex Calixtinus is a complex and heterogeneous manuscript consisting of a total of 225 written parchment folios. It is conceived as a grand encyclopedic work, divided into 5 independent books.

Its Component Chapters

The structure of the manuscript unfolds into 5 major thematic sections:

Book I: “The Book of Liturgies“. It occupies half of the volume and forms the religious core of the work. It contains sermons, homilies, masses, and liturgical offices in honor of Saint James the Apostle, designed to be sung and prayed.

Book II: “The Book of Miracles“. A compilation of twenty-two miracles attributed to Saint James the Apostle. They narrate the salvation of pilgrims in the worst possible situations.

Book III: “The Translation of the Body“. The briefest text, centered on recounting how the body of Saint James was transported in a stone boat by his disciples from Jerusalem to Galicia.

Book IV: “The Chronicle of Turpin“. Falsely attributed to Archbishop Turpin of Reims, it narrates the military exploits of Charlemagne in the Iberian Peninsula and his struggle to liberate the trail from Muslim forces.

Book V: “The Pilgrim’s Guide“. The most famous section of the codex. It is the actual travel diary written by Aymeric Picaud, which details the stages, geography, monuments, and dangers of the route from France to Santiago de Compostela.

The Codex Calixtinus as the First “Cycloroute Guide” for the Pilgrim

For the pilgrim community, Book V of the Codex Calixtinus is a cult work. Looking at its pages today, Aymeric Picaud created the first planning and logistics manual in history; he organized the French Way into thirteen official stages.

Picaud conducted a field audit; the manuscript warns the pilgrim about the changing quality of the trails, detailing which sections are flat, firm, and fast for making progress, and which ones are steep, rocky, and treacherous for feet or hooves. Furthermore, the text rates the hospitality or danger of the villages, alerting readers to the greed of ferrymen who charge extortionate fees to cross rivers or the aggressiveness of toll collectors.

One of the greatest curiosities of the Codex Calixtinus is that it includes a detailed catalog regarding the safety of the rivers, warning with absolute precision in which water current it is safe to refill one’s flask, and which rivers were poisoned by harmful minerals or the bad practices of locals.

The Heist of the Century: The Mystery of the Santiago Cathedral in 2011

In July 2011, an international alarm went off that paralyzed the planet’s cultural institutions: the Codex Calixtinus had disappeared from the vault of the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral archives without any lock being forced and without triggering any electronic alarm system.

For nearly a year, investigative agencies from half the world followed false leads pointing to sophisticated international mafias, billionaire collectors, or plots of ecclesiastical revenge. However, the resolution of the mystery turned out to be worthy of a novel. In July 2012, authorities arrested Manuel Fernández Castiñeras, a humble man who had worked for more than 25 years as a maintenance electrician, as the perpetrator of the theft.

The agents found the Codex Calixtinus in a perfect state of conservation, wrapped in old rags and plastic bags inside a garage, along with millions of euros in cash that he had been stealing from the collection boxes of the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral.

What is the Codex Calixtinus and What is its True Historical Significance?
