The recommended maximum is that your luggage should not exceed 10% of your body weight; otherwise, the impact on your joints multiplies. For cyclists, carrying too much weight in the panniers alters the bike’s balance and forces the knees and lower back to make an extra effort.

Injuries on the Camino de Santiago on Foot

If you decide to do the Camino de Santiago on foot, the impact against the ground and friction will be your main enemies. These are the most frequent injuries:

Blisters and chafing

Blisters can be considered the worst nightmare for pilgrims. They arise from the combination of three factors: friction, heat, and moisture. If this problem is not treated in time, chafing can force you to abandon the stage.

Tendinitis

Tendinitis is the inflammation of tendons due to overuse. We can distinguish two types of tendinitis:

Achilles tendinitis (in the heel): caused by excessive stages on asphalt and prolonged climbs.

Patellar tendinitis: appears due to the continuous impact of braking the body’s weight on steep descents.

Plantar fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a condition that inflames the thick tissue on the sole of the foot, causing a sharp, stabbing pain in the heel. It is usually especially intense in the mornings when taking the first steps or getting out of bed. This condition arises from wearing footwear with poor cushioning or soles that are too rigid for asphalt.

Muscle soreness / Muscle contractures

Muscle soreness is caused by micro-tears in muscle fibers due to a lack of prior training. On the other hand, contractures are permanent muscle tensions or “knots,” which arise from constant overload and the weight of the backpack.

Sprains

Sprains occur due to a wrong move or a stumble. This ailment is very common on rocky descents or when stepping on roots along the trails, especially when accumulated fatigue makes us lose concentration and the firmness of our step.

Injuries on the Camino de Santiago by Bicycle

Cyclists on the Camino de Santiago suffer a different type of wear and tear. Since they are not exposed to direct impact against the ground, their joints suffer less pounding, but problems arise caused by the static posture and friction with the bike’s contact points.

Neck and lower back pain due to poor sustained posture

Cyclists, by spending so much time holding the handlebars, are forced to arch their backs and lift their necks to look ahead. If the distance between the saddle and the handlebars is not correct, you will end the stage with an overload in the lower back and cervical tension that leads to headaches and numbness in the hands.

Knee overload and the risk of patellar chondromalacia

The most important thing for a cyclist is the knees. If the saddle is too low, the knee will overwork. If you add to this the abuse of hard gears, the risk of suffering tendon inflammation or patellar chondromalacia skyrockets.

Chafing and sciatic pain caused by the saddle

Cyclists spend many hours sitting, bearing their own weight, and the bumps in the terrain take their toll. The constant friction in the perineal area, combined with sweat, causes very painful chafing and small cysts. Additionally, the continuous pressure on the ischial bones can become unbearable if the saddle does not have the right width.

The golden rule of prevention: How to reach Santiago de Compostela without pain

The best way to heal an injury is to prevent it from appearing in the first place. Your gear and daily routines will make all the difference.

The biomechanical adjustment of your bicycle and the choice of bib shorts

To avoid problems, before setting out, make sure the saddle height is exact so that your leg is slightly bent at the lowest point of the pedal stroke. Additionally, it is advisable to buy a high-end pair of bib shorts with a gel or high-density foam chamois designed for routes of more than 5 hours.

Footwear, socks, and the use of petroleum jelly for walkers

Pilgrims should opt for trekking or trail running shoes that are lightweight and have good cushioning. Combine them with technical anti-blister socks (seamless) and apply petroleum jelly generously to your feet and between your toes every morning.

The importance of stretching before and after each stage

It is essential to spend 10 minutes stretching after finishing the stage (before your muscles cool down). Focus on your calves, quadriceps, hamstrings, and back. This reduces accumulated muscle tension, promotes recovery, and prevents the fibers from shortening and causing tendinitis the next day.

Why do injuries occur on the Camino de Santiago?
