It does not consist of a different route, but rather adapting existing routes with infrastructures, services, and tools that allow everyone to participate.

This concept includes measures such as: Braille signage and audio systems for people with visual impairments, training for hostel volunteers, and the availability of technical materials. This project is a reality thanks to the collaboration of administrations, associations, and volunteers.

Which routes of the Camino de Santiago are the most accessible?

Not all routes of the Camino de Santiago offer the same level of accessibility. Some have flatter profiles, better-maintained surfaces, and adapted services.

The French Way: the route with the most adapted resources

The French Way is considered the route with the most resources for people with disabilities. As it is the most popular route, it offers the greatest number of accessible accommodations, luggage transport services, and assistance points.

This route has many sections on compact dirt paths or asphalt, which makes it easier for wheelchairs to move along. Additionally, it is recommended to be cautious with elevation changes such as the Alto de Perdón or O Cebreiro, which in some cases may require assistance.

The Portuguese Way: accessibility on the coast

The Portuguese Way, specifically the coastal variant with a flatter profile and good-quality trails, makes it an ideal route for people with reduced mobility. Additionally, on this itinerary, accommodations are progressively adapting, and more and more infrastructures are offering accessible facilities.

The Northern Way and other routes with added difficulties

The Northern Way is a type of route that presents difficulties for people with disabilities, due to its elevation changes and sections with uneven surfaces. Other similar routes, such as the Primitive Way or the Winter Way, are even more demanding and require a higher level of preparation and support.

This does not mean that they are impossible to do, but rather that they require greater planning and preparation, and in some cases, going accompanied by specialized guides.

What type of disability has the most facilities on the Accessible Camino de Santiago?

The level of resources varies depending on the type of disability. Some disabilities have more developed resources, although the trend is toward continuous improvement.

Physical disability and reduced mobility

People with physical disabilities or reduced mobility are the ones with the most resources available. You can find all-terrain wheelchairs adapted for uneven terrain, handbikes, and personalized assistance services. Additionally, most infrastructures have adapted their facilities with ramps, elevators, and accessible restrooms. However, it is advisable to plan the stages and have the necessary support for the more challenging sections.

Visual and hearing impairment

People with visual impairments have Braille signage at some points and mobile applications with audio descriptions. Additionally, you will find associations that organize guided pilgrimages with volunteers who act as companions.

People with hearing impairments have visual signage and vibration systems in some hostels; in this area, there is still considerable room for improvement.

Intellectual or cognitive disability

People with intellectual or cognitive disabilities have access to various adapted programs that simplify information, use pictograms, and create clear routines to make the experience as safe as possible.

Furthermore, this experience is highly enriching, especially if undertaken in a group and with the support of qualified instructors.

Resources and services for pilgrims with disabilities

Rental of adapted equipment: all-terrain wheelchairs, handbikes

One of the most important resources is the rental of adapted equipment. Different companies and associations provide all-terrain wheelchairs, either manual or electric, and handbikes for people with reduced mobility in their lower limbs.

These adapted materials allow you to travel the Camino de Santiago in a way that would otherwise be impossible.

Accessible accommodations with adapted services

Over time, we find more and more hostels and hotels providing accessible facilities. Infrastructures have begun to include: rooms with wide doors, adapted bathrooms, showers with seats, and adjustable beds.

Additionally, the Spanish Federation of Friends of the Camino de Santiago Associations offers updated guides with information on the accessibility of each accommodation.

Associations and specialized guides

You will find numerous associations that work to make the Camino de Santiago accessible. Generally, they organize group pilgrimages, provide personalized accompaniment, and update the condition of the trails. There are also specialized guides who know every difficulty and solution for each type of disability.

What is the Accessible Camino de Santiago?
