With these letters, they requested hospitality and help from the institutions and people they encountered along the Camino de Santiago. They were a safe-conduct and a letter of introduction that opened the doors of hospitals, hostels and monasteries along the route.

Letters of recommendation were issued before setting out on the journey and were not modified during the trip. Their validity depended on the authority that had issued them and on the recognition that authority had in the places through which the pilgrim passed. It was a personal and non-transferable document, but also a reflection of the power and influence of the person who issued it.

Historical origin of letters of recommendation for pilgrims

The origin of letters of recommendation for pilgrims goes back to the Middle Ages, when pilgrimages were at their height. Pilgrims needed a document or proof that certified their pilgrim status in order to be admitted to the hospitals and hostels along the route.

The first letters emerged in the ecclesiastical sphere. Bishops and abbots issued them for the faithful of their dioceses who decided to make the pilgrimage. Over time, the practice spread to the civil sphere: kings, lords and municipal authorities began to issue their own letters of recommendation.

Who issued letters of recommendation for pilgrims?

Letters of recommendation for pilgrims were issued by different authorities, both ecclesiastical and civil. The most common thing was for bishops and abbots to issue them, as they had religious authority and could appeal to the Christian charity of the hospitals and monasteries.

There could also be royal recommendations, issued by kings and queens, which had a special value because they carried the backing of civil power. They usually contained requests for protection and help, and often exempted the pilgrim from paying tolls and fees. In addition, some lords and authorities could issue letters to pilgrims from their territories.

What did letters of recommendation for pilgrims include?

In the past, depending on who issued the letter of recommendation for pilgrims and who it was addressed to, it contained a series of different elements. Generally speaking, they all tended to include a series of common elements, the identification of the pilgrim: name, place of origin and, sometimes, their trade or social status.

It was also common for the destination of the pilgrimage and the reason for the journey to appear (religious, penitential or as an act of thanksgiving). In addition, the letters included an explicit request for hospitality and help. In some cases, exemption from taxes and tolls was requested.

The functions of letters of recommendation on the Camino de Santiago

Letters of recommendation for pilgrims played different roles throughout history.
