On the other hand, cyclists must bear in mind that not all sections are suitable for bicycles, and that at many points the cycling route deviates from the walking route in order to avoid certain trails or stairways.

In addition, cyclists will find specific signs for bicycles, such as plaques with the bicycle symbol, indications of alternative routes and danger warnings. On some routes, and depending on which section you are on, the signposting for bicycles is more developed, with information panels and stage maps.

Types of signs the cyclist will find on the Camino de Santiago

Along the route, the cyclist will find various signs, and knowing them is essential to follow the route without problems. Most common types of signs:

Yellow arrows: The most common sign on the Camino de Santiago. They indicate the direction of the route, although they do not usually distinguish between the walking path and the cycling path.

Markers and milestones: Stone or concrete posts that mark the route; they are usually found in Galicia. They include the distance to Santiago.

Plaques with the bicycle symbol: They indicate alternative routes for cyclists.

Traffic signs: Warnings for bends, crossroads, slopes and other road conditions.

Information panels: Stage maps, distances and services.

Signposting of alternative routes: Indications of variants and detours.

Signposting problems for bicycles on the Camino de Santiago

Despite the great efforts made by the associations and public authorities, the Camino de Santiago for bicycles presents many frequent problems. Here are the most common ones:

Contradictory arrows: Arrows pointing in opposite directions or that do not distinguish between the walking route and the cycling route.

Deteriorated signs: Faded arrows, fallen or stolen markers.

Lack of specific signposting for bicycles: On many sections, cyclists must share the route with pedestrians, without clear indications.

Confusion at crossroads and forks: Points where the route divides and it is not clear which is the correct path.

Poorly signposted urban sections: In cities, the signposting gets lost among the traffic and tourist signs.

Signposting of the Camino de Santiago for bicycles by route

Not all routes are signposted in the same way for bicycles; these are the most notable differences by route:

Camino Francés: the best-signposted route

The Camino Francés is the best-signposted route. Yellow arrows are present all along the way, and on the most difficult sections there are detours for cyclists. In addition, you will find a large number of information panels and stage maps. On this route, it should be borne in mind that in the last 100 km the crowds cause the signposting to deteriorate.

Camino del Norte: coastal signposting and urban sections

The Camino del Norte has irregular signposting. On the coastal sections, the signposting competes with hiking signs or tourist indications, which can cause confusion. In certain cities, such as San Sebastián or Bilbao, signposting for bicycles is scarce, and it is easy to get lost. It is advisable to use a GPS or offline maps.

Camino Portugués: Portuguese and Galician signposting

The Camino Portugués has varied signposting.

In Portugal, the yellow arrows coexist with other signposting systems, and on some sections the cycling route separates from the walking route.

In Galicia, the signposting improves, although you will find problematic areas, specifically at the entrances to cities.

Questions about signposting on the Camino de Santiago for bicycles

Is there specific signposting for bicycles on the Camino?

Yes, although not on all sections.
